Distinguished Centre Chief Investigator and ANU Professor Graham Farquhar AO has been named ACT Senior Australian of the Year for 2018.

National winners will then be announced ahead of Australia Day in January.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt AC congratulated the nominees. “ANU is tremendously proud of the contributions made by Graham, and on behalf of the University I congratulate him on his achievement,” Professor Schmidt said.

Professor Farquhar, earlier this year became the first Australian to win the prestigious Kyoto Prize. He was recognised for his work in plant biophysics and photosynthesis, which has involved research on water-efficient crops and the impacts of climate change.

Graham has received a string of accolades during his distinguished career for his research examining how water efficient crops can protect food security in a changing climate. Importantly, he has worked to improve world food security by developing strains of wheat that can grow with less water.
